If you're heading to Alnwick for Christmas, you're in for a real treat.
For two days in November the castle opens its doors for a festive fair and after dark the Garden glows with giant baubles and music drifting across the lake. Down at the old railway station, Barter Books lights its open fires. And if you're brave, there's a Boxing Day dip in the North Sea.

1. Alnwick Castle Christmas Fair (24 to 25 November)
This one's special. The castle is closed to general visitors from October to March, because, as one forum regular put it, "the family actually live there over the winter". For two days, though, the doors open and the Guest Hall fills with stalls, seasonal food and drink and local makers, with the likes of Hepple Spirits and Cath Collins Fragrances taking part.
Go to the preview evening on the Tuesday for a welcome drink and first pick of the gifts. The market day follows on the Wednesday.

2. The Christmas lights switch-on (late November)
Wrap up warm and squeeze into Market Place.
In 2025 the carols and treats started at 6pm and at 7pm the Duchess of Northumberland helped a young local flick the switch, while the independent shops stayed open late. The 2026 date is still to come, so keep an eye on Alnwick Town Council's events page.
3. Alnwick's Christmas grotto (27 November to 24 December)
Little ones will want to meet the real Father Christmas and Alnwick's Christmas lays on elves, a photo in Santa's sleigh, a gingerbread house serving hot drinks and a gift for every child.
It's not at the Alnwick Garden, which catches a few people out.
4. Ford and Etal Christmas Market (28 to 29 November)
Fancy a day trip? The Ford and Etal market spreads its stalls across Ford Village, Ford Castle, Etal and Heatherslaw.

Is the Alnwick Garden light trail worth it?
For most families, yes. Pull on your warmest coat and head down after dark, when life-sized Nutcrackers stand guard, giant baubles glow among the trees and Christmas music drifts across the lake. Then cross over to Lilidorei next door, where the lights carry on through the treehouse village. The Winter Lights run from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 and one ticket covers both. One Tripadvisor reviewer who went in November 2024 wrote: "I loved how seasonal the trail is with music and themed lighting."
It isn't for everyone, mind. A few visitors grumbled about dark paths and paying extra for parking.
Bloggers and past visitors keep coming back to the same tips:
- Bring a small torch. Rachael's Thoughts found the swings area "quite dark".
- Don't panic about your time slot. North East Family Fun turned up an hour early and walked straight in.
- Leave time for both trails. They spent about an hour in the Garden and 40 minutes at Lilidorei.
- Eat properly before or after. The food is more snacks than supper, but there's hot chocolate, mulled wine and mulled cider to carry round.
- Grab glow sticks for the kids. Lilidorei's play area is pitch dark once the sun's gone.
- Pack wellies, hats and gloves, and go in mid-November if you can, when it's quieter.
What do visitors say about Alnwick at Christmas?
"Alnwick is definitely worth visiting in December! It will be beautiful with the Christmas lights."
That's one local's verdict on the Tripadvisor Alnwick forum. The same thread has a word of warning, too: "it will be dark earlier in December". Do the walks and the coast in the morning and save the lights for when it's properly dark.
Calling all bookworms! On a wet afternoon nearly everyone ends up at Barter Books, one of Britain's biggest second-hand bookshops, set in Alnwick's grand Victorian station with a model railway running over the shelves and the original "Keep Calm and Carry On" poster. The bookshop's own site says it best: "open fires in the Winter, beloved by all".

What about Boxing Day and New Year's Day?
Head for the coast, just like the locals do.
According to the Northumberland Gazette, the Beach House hotel in Seahouses has run a Boxing Day dip from 10.30am, raising money for the RNLI and Northumberland Dog Rescue. On New Year's Day, Northumberland Dog Rescue has held a dip on Bamburgh beach at 11am, while Alnmouth's is a turn up and dip affair from around noon. Check the latest details nearer the time.
Not a fan of cold water? Walk off the turkey on the Alnmouth circular walk instead, which Alnwick Castle lists at about 6km, or take the flatter Alnwick Greenway straight out of town.
What should you know before booking a festive cottage in Alnwick?
A few things will make the week run smoothly.
- The castle won't be open for tours. The Christmas Fair is the only way in over the winter.
- Book restaurants early. The week before Christmas is busy.
- Do the big food shop by the 24th. Supermarkets close on Christmas Day.
