The School House is a single-storey cottage tucked into the hillside at the foot of The Cheviot, the highest point in Northumberland National Park. It sits on a working farm in the remote College Valley, with only a short steep road leading in and a step up to the front door. Two bedrooms sleep four: a super-king room and a twin, both done out in calming tones with soft furnishings. There's a downstairs bedroom and bathroom, so access is easier than most cottages this remote.

College Valley is no ordinary spot. Access is controlled with only 12 vehicle permits issued each day, so the roads stay quiet and the valley stays peaceful. The whole area falls within a designated Dark Sky Park, so clear nights bring proper stargazing with none of the usual light pollution. Wooler, the nearest town, is 10 miles off and has a good spread of independent shops selling local produce. The Heritage Coast, with Bamburgh Castle, Seahouses and Holy Island of Lindisfarne, lies 24 miles away.

Inside, the layout is open-plan and sociable. The lounge-diner has comfortable seating, a Smart TV, a round dining table and a cosy open fire for evenings in. The kitchen has a gas oven and hob, microwave, fridge/freezer and a window looking straight out over the valley. The bathroom has both a bath and shower plus underfloor heating. Outside, a fully enclosed garden looks onto surrounding hills and woodland and it's safe for children and dogs. Up to three pets are welcome.

Walkers have The Cheviot summit and its trails right on the doorstep. Bamburgh Castle is around 24 miles away (roughly 45 minutes' drive) and Holy Island of Lindisfarne sits close by on the same coast. Alnwick Castle and Gardens are within reach for a day out and the market town of Wooler, 10 miles away, is good for a wander and a bite to eat. Seahouses harbour makes a fine base for boat trips out to the Farne Islands.
